Just my two cents here, but if you're old enough get a gun. My dogs "alert" me if there's a noise, but I would never let them judge if the situation warrants more or less barking. Have a solid quiet command in place too. If someone is trying to communicate over loud barking how will you hear it. I also don't expect my dogs to protect me in any situation. If they do, bravo!, if not it won't matter. I got a glock aimed at your chest. Remember no matter what breed of dog you have it's your job as owner to protect them, not the other way around. Again, this is just how I handle things in my house.
