My dogs are allowed to have at it from the moment they notice someone at the door to the point that I open it. They know this, and will only bark until the point that my hand touches the doorknob, at which point they'll shut up and their following behavior will depend on how they feel about the person on the other side of the door: strangers get a quiet, unbreaking leer while friends get the happy-dance.

There's only been one time that Reba, my older GSD would not let up when a new gentleman came to visit my sister late at night. Being a fairly open dog, it was unlike her to behave that way, and she made it painfully clear that his very existence was a burden to her...lol. He was promptly notified that since my dog didn't want him in the house right then, I didn't either and that she could meet him outside.
