very true. When i was a groomer this was a clear sign to me that it was time to stop whatever I was doing and get a muzzle. I think it looks very specific when that is the reason for the lip licking, i would never say it looked like a dog that wanted to eat, it is similar to an uneasy dog flicking it's tongue combined with a stiff frozen look. that might be a bad description, but after a few sets of stiches i remembered what it meant,
I know exactly what you mean, I'm very familiar with that sign. Lip licking means the dog is super uncomfortable. A lot of dogs do it as a "Go away, leave me alone" or "I'm SUPER uncomfortable/nervous/worked up" thing.
