I would never crop a dog that old. Adults generally don't handle surgery/pain as well as pups. I would also never use a vet that I couldn't see crops they had done.

If you're not showing him, I don't really see the point in cropping.. I'm one who wouldn't crop a pet dog, or a mutt, just don't see the point.
