Posting "Beware of Dog" signs vary by state, county, city, even neighborhood. In an area I used to live in North Georgia, if you had a large dog that was in your yard, and you wanted to PREVENT being held liable for injuries from your dog protecting your property (legitimately) you were required to post a "Beware of Dog" sign per local law enforcement and local ordinances.

In other areas, posting a "Beware of Dog" sign says, "my dog is dangerous. I can be held liable if he bites."

We have "DOG ON PREMISES" signs on our two gates on our privacy fence. Granted, our dogs aren't outside when we're not home, but it lets people know, "hey...caution. We have dogs," but it doesn't suggest anything.
