There really isn't anything that keeps snakes away other than making it not a friendly habitat. Don't leave anything lying around that would make a good hiding spot or draw rodents. Google "snake species" for your region and see what's common in your area. The vast majority of snakes are non-venomous and are actually beneficial to have around. They'll either keep the rodent population down, or like with kingsnakes, will eat any venomous snakes that wander through.
