I would venture to say that you cannot generalize when it comes to gender ...

It all depends - IMHO - on the individual dog's genetic make-up/temperament.

My female (RIP), Madeleine, was giddy, silly and NOT laid back, and not moody in any way, shape or form. She lived to be 9 and 1/2 years of age.

My male, Trusty, is laid back and a 'Zen' dog with people, but high prey-drive around many other critters ...

Generally, opposite gender is a best bet - but not a guarantee that the pair gets along.
