I attended quite a few trials (obedience and agility) prior to ever entering, so I can only recommend doing it. It's fun to watch and sooooooo gets you motivated. A little scared, too, but mostly motivated
I think it's a great idea to attend first. When I was showing horses I always recommended newbies to attend shows w/o their horses first.
I really wanted to, but it just never worked out for me.

I think having shown horses for so long helped at my first trial. While I didn't know exactly how a trial ran, I knew how shows progressed, so figured trial were basically the same, and I didn't have the first time competition nerves. It was kinda funny at the first trial, several people I train with kept asking if I was nervous...ummm, nope.
