I always ask before petting someone's dog. Went to PetSmart a while back, and the lady had a great dane pup. Handsome dog. I got to talking to the lady a little bit, and then asked if I could pet him, I didn't just run up and pet her dog.

That would have made me mad as well. There is dog petting etiquette to follow.
