The Ancestors of the Pitbull

The Pitbull breed dates back to 50 A.D. The ancestors are the Molossian family of dogs or canus molossi. The way the Molossian dogs got their name is by the people they most associated with. That would be a tribe called Molossi. The Molossi tribe lived in ancient Greece and loved the use of aggressive, muscular dogs in warfare. They were used specifically to intimidate rivals tribes during battle. They weren't just used for warfare, they were also used for trade. They often traded Molossian dogs for food, equipment, medicines, etc.
Another ancestrial family of the Pitbull is the Mastiff breed that was created by the Molossian breed. They were used by the Britons for warfare and guard dogs. The tides turned and the Britons went to war with the Romans. The Romans defeated the Britons and took advantage of the use of the Mastiff dogs by using them in coliseums and arenas for entertainment. The Romans got really into the dog fighting and started mix breeding the Mastiff breed to see what different combinations of breeds would do in the fighting aspect of it. They did this from 50 A.D. to 410 A.D.

The Bullenbeisser

Bullenbeissers

Unfortuntaly the Romans would not be the last people to use these dogs in cruel and dangerous fighting. When the Normans invaded England in 1066 they created a new dog breed named Bullenbeissers. The name came from butchers who own and handled this type of dog. The main use for Bullenbeissers was to herd cattle in for slaughter. If the cattle got out of line the dog would then clamp down on one of the hind legs of the cow until the owner had full control. The Normans were so impressed with their dogs they held showcases all the time to show off their dogs to the whole town. At the showcases the dogs would show off their ability and strength.

Baiting a bear

Ratting

Baiting

The Normans introduced the sport of baiting. In the 1500s every town in England had at least one baiting ring. The Normans would put a bull and 1 or 2 dogs in the ring to attack the bull. These dogs were trained to harass and torture the bull until it collapsed with fatique or death. As with anything, the people of England got bored and wanted to try out different animals. For example, bears, horses, boars, and monkeys.

Illegailization of Baiting / Creation of Ratting

The Norman people got so out of hand with the game that in 1835 British goverment illigalized baiting. That did not stop the people from participating in dog fighting. Since they illegalized baiting they created a new game called ratting. Ratting is pretty much the same thing as baiting except they put two dogs or more in an arena with a bunch of rats. The dogs would race against the clock to see which dog would kill the most rats in that time frame. The word pit in the name pitbull came from the game of ratting because a pit was used to keep the rats from escaping. Ratting was easier to control and hide because the normans and englishmen were now using smaller animals. They got by with the game of ratting so easily that they decided to cross breed the dogs.

A pitbull-terrier

Pitbull / Terrier

Since this type of dog fighting required smaller and more agile type dogs they cross-breeded pitbulls and terriers. The terriers is well known for its smarts and focus. This is where the first pitbull terriers were created. This dog has the fighting instincts but also has the smarts and determination to go with it. These dogs were trained to fight and still are to this day. After they breeded these two dogs they then made two pitbull terriers get into an arena and fight each other.

English Immigrants

The Immigration to America

The English Immigrated to America and brought their dogs over with them. They started and influenced others to start dog fighting. He got really popular in America and the Englishmen and Americans kept breeding and training the pitbull terriers. They didn't just fight. They still herded cattle and guarded property for families and farmers. They were used for good too, but mostly for bad.

American Pitbull Terriers

Even though these dogs are used for fighting they are still beautiful animals. Dog fighting still continues to this day and is not stopping anytime soon. It is illegal but it is so popular in America that there is to much of it going on to completely stop it.
