Those who searched so diligently for an autistic seven-year-old Nova Scotia boy lost in the woods for almost 48 hours in blizzard conditions, and who hoped for a miracle when they found him clinging to life last week, were among the last to say goodbye at his funeral yesterday.
Spruce cuttings were placed on James Delorey's casket by the search crews -- police, paramedics and others - at his funeral at Holy Redeemer Church in Whitney Pier, near Sydney, N.S.
Delorey was found suffering from hypothermia after two nights lost in the woods near his home north of Sydney. He wasn't wearing a coat, hat or mittens. He died in hospital the next day.
The boy had wandered away from his home in South Bar on Dec. 5, following his dog, Chance, into a woods. Chance had apparently huddled with James during his time lost in the bush, with some suggesting the dog's warmth might have helped keep him alive. When the dog returned two days later, a search team was able to track its paw prints back back to the boy.
Chance walked beside the casket as it was taken into the church, where hundreds gathered to pay their final respects.
Rev. Errol MacDonald said there was light to be found in the darkness. "There was a miracle and then he turned into a Christmas angel."
