You really have to keep reminding yourself when you're watching those shows that it doesn't happen as quickly as it appears - whether it's Milan, Stilwell or anyone else. I much prefer Stilwell's methods, but it doesn't hurt to pick up bits and pieces from everyone. It's the same with horse trainers - there are sooo many of them out there too and each has his/her own methods.
It's critical to be keenly aware of what your own dog needs, how it reacts and what you're comfortable doing. Every dog/owner combo is different.
It's funny, I find myself watching the dog training shows and thinking how clueless some of the owners are and how simple some of the fixes are, and yet, my border collie is far from perfect!
Still, I love happy endings when a dog/owner with issues becomes a team
