It's very possible that your parents' friends' dogs are not purebred themselves thus the reason why you might be seeing the longer fur, etc.

As for being muscular, while it's genetics for many dogs, others have to work at it just like humans have to work at it. It takes exercise and conditioning and proper nutrition.
