i am also from australia From NSW and it is the American Pitbull Terrier that is banned, although can still be found if you look hard enough people still do have them, but beware as they are banned and u will lose the dog n get a hefty fine if ya get caught if you choose the get an APBT.
in Australia we have
1. staffy
2. American Staffordshire Terrier
3. American Pitbull Terrier
4. Bull Terrier (which is the one with the long noses.

a staffie as you call it is not wat they call a AMBULLY in America they are different
i personally dont know much about AMBULLYS but too me(dont bash me)to put simply they looks like an overdone staffy weighing bout 100 times more but same size, bit bigger head bigger boned n muscle etc.

American Staffordshire Terrier look very similar to American Pitbull Terriers. AST in simple terms are taller then the Staffy but still look similar with same structure just bigger again anyone correct me if i am wrong.

APBT is similar to AST but are much more lean and athletic put simply lol.

And finally Bull Terriers as you said are the one with log noses.

they are all pretty closely related i think anyways so yes it is a bit confusing.
but here in australia u will very rarely see an APBT usually the other 3.
