If you swing easy on a day like today here especially, the ball would probably end up behind you...

I'd still swing it slower. If you're playing in a comp then I'd rather take 100yds less and straight than playing 3 or 5 from the tee. One of my friends has played Rye where they play some top amateur events and he used this technique to win a scratch event with a score of +9 (I think that explains how windy it was)
