Amol - that was a fantastic write up!
I had the pleasure of playing with Kris Tamulis, Hawk, and Seth on Saturday morning. I knew that Kris is naturally a shy/quiet person but me blabbing the way that I do was hoping to get her chatting a little bit.
We started on number 8 at the new course and after a near death experience of Seth driving us over a bunker (which luckily had no sand on the other side) we found the tee box. Hawk was smart enough to drive around the bunker.
Kris showed us from the first tee what she would be doing all day long and that was putting it about 240 down the middle. Smooth fluid swing that did not change once the entire round. I had heard that Kris plays boring golf and I wish that I could also. Fairways, greens, 2 putt pars and the occasional birdie. So, this is how golf is supposed to played, huh? Here are some highlights from that round for me:
- Par 4 and Kris finds her only FW pot bunker of the day. Nasty lie and she can only advance it 10-15 yards. Looking like a possible bogey here. Nope, she nails it to 3 feet from 160 on one of the hardest greens on the course....I 3 jacked from 45 feet for bogey.
- Kris' ability to read a green is amazing. She has this little plastic card that was always in her back pocket with a bunch of numbers on it. Had stimp info, degrees, all kinds of stuff. It was basically about figuring out how hard the ball must be hit to get it 1 foot past the hole. She drained every putt within 10 feet I believe and several were for good par saves.
- She ended up shooting 70. 16 pars and 2 birdies. Seth and I both shot 83 and we both birdied the same 2 holes. Not sure what Hawk shot.
- A pet peeve of Kris' is how her last name is pronounced. I thought it was Tam-you-lis. Nope, it is like Tamales except say "us" at the end. Luckily, she did not get mad at me.
- After a few holes I had to ask just how bad my swing was. She was gentle in her word choice and chose to focus on the positive aspect saying something to the effect of "you make really good contact".
- I did notice that Kris was playing the RBZ Tour driver like Moira and I asked her why that over the R11 or R11S. She said that she was seeing an extra 10-14 yards out of it and really the only adjustment was looking down at something different coming from the R11. She had the i20 irons in play if I am not mistaken along with a TM belly putter.
She was an absolute joy to play with and we all enjoyed every second of it. I can't thank GG & JB enough for the opportunity, truly a once in a lifetime experience!!
