I think the problem is that "stupid" and "dumb" are a) not quantifiable b) emotionally loaded. If I say something's "way to expensive FOR ME" or " I would never pay that much for that", then those are true statements. What's not true is that anyone who chooses to pay that much is stupid. Their circumstances are such that to them, it makes sense. The most I could say might be "unwise", if say...the exact same socks are sold for 1/4 as much without the word "Golf" on them. Think "alignment sticks" vs "driveway markers". Even then, if someone has the coin....go to it, I can think they've made a bad decision without thinking they're somehow inferior for it.
