Excellent post! But isn't saying 'unwise' the PC way of letting someone know their purchase is dumb.

I suppose it could be. To me, they're different things. "Unwise" is a milder term. I suppose "sub-optimal" would come closer, but that's tougher to work into day-to-day conversation.
