I don't think you were in the wrong especially considering you apologized twice. I think parents do odd things at odd times as I know I do, but that is classic teaching situation and all he taught his kids is to be rude when someone else is genuinely trying to be considerate. All things considered you'll probably not even put yourself in this situation again which will be best of course, but no I don't think you were in the wrong and he had a little right to be a little upset but the way he handled it sounds like he made a poor decision as well.
