I never really learned the game from anyone, so didn't have much guidance. I started with 2 logical points and added a 3rd later on by listening to people I played with. The 2 I started with were "always be confident nothing I do will be likely to hurt anyone," and "don't do anything I wouldn't want somebody else to do". These taught me things like don't hit into people, and don't talk or move around while others are getting ready to hit (a massive peeve of mine; STOP TALKING before I shoot!). The 3rd I learned by listening to conversations through the green, and I basically say as "don't do anything that might interfere with any shot". This covers the rest of things like don't stand in people's sight-lines or cross their lines. The major ones I got on my own, but the minutiae I learned just from playing lots of golf with lots of people.
