I am in the same situation as you, kind of. I got to where I wasn't hitting good tee shots, so I've started hitting a 6 or 7 iron off the tee, and then usually one of those to the green also. It really does yield lower scores, and until I get a new driver, or figure this R9 out, I'm going to be playing conservatively as well.
