General Grant wanted and got unconditional surrender as well.

When a nation or group of nations engages in reprehensible evil they deserve to die.

Deserving to die is not the point of this thread. The point is under what conditions does are unconditional surrender called for when a negotiated surrender can save lives on both sides?

What reprehensible evil did Grant's enemies do other than want to be let alone?
