In stroke play the rules don't require you to mark even if you are asked to. You always have the option of putting out. It isn't practical though if you would be standing in someone else's line in doing so. I will usually putt out if I'm within 3-4 feet after the first putt, but it just depends on who I'm playing with and where their lines are in relation to my ball, etc.
I'm a believer in playing ready golf, and continuous putting is just one aspect of that.
