Let's look back at WW II, Korea, and Viet Nam. We won WW II decisively by utterly demoralizing the Axis and look what happened to our enemies. Japan, Germany and Italy are now friends and allies.

On the other hand we don't have 2,000-3,000 years of history of fighting with those countries supporting an ongoing hatred of each other. We do have some history with fighting the British and we did seem to overcome that problem after a couple hundred years.
