I was involved once with a mosque and while the overwhelming majority of the members were moderate, the mosque was very fundamental. I asked one of my friends why that was. He thought a bit and said, "Well, we can compromise and they can't."

I think that's a significant factor. On the one hand you have people who simply want to make things better and on the other hand you have people who already have the answer and all they want to do is to implement that answer. Remember, once you've kicked in the door then you can do what you want. Well, until the homeowner comes home.
"Compromise" means not killing non-Muslims? How nice of those "moderate" Muslims to struggle with such a compromise not to cut my throat and those of my family.
