Playing Glenwood CC in Glenwood AR, I arrived in 9 fairway looking down at the green which was nestled adjacent to the practice green and with the clubhouse behind the practice green. This area was all concrete and the clubhouse had a concrete balcony that extended the full length of the building.
At this moment, there was a tournament preparing to start and the area was covered in golfers putting their clubs on their carts and practice putting. Some just milling around on the balcony. I was about 130 out with the hole playing downhill. I pulled a 9 iron and hit away. My ball flew toward the green, then over the green onto the concrete pad. The ball then caroomed down the length of the clubhouse alternately hitting the concrete apron and the underside of the concrete balcony. Golfers scattered everywhere running from this raging missile. Once the ball had passed out the other end of this congregation, every eye in the area turned almost in unison to me standing in the middle of the fairway looking forlornly at my
6 iron
that I had pulled by mistake.
There was no where to hide, no way to run, I had to look at them, shrug my shoulders and point impotently at my club in a vain attempt to explain that I was NOT a complete idiot, just a poor hapless soul that had accidently hit way too much club and put them all in harm's way. My pantomine did not work well although I did get a smattering of applause and quite a bit of laughter as I made my way sheepishly past them towards 10. I did not finish the hole and could barely finish the round I was so abjectly ashamed of my faux pas.
It is finally funny now.
