BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan, Jan. 6, 2010 – Afghan and international forces have removed nearly two dozen key insurgents from the fight in Afghanistan since mid November, military officials here reported today.
Afghan National Security Forces, with help from NATO’s International Security Assistance Force and coalition forces, have continued to remove militants from eastern Afghanistan, creating a safer environment for the Afghan people, ISAF officials said.
Between Nov. 14 and Dec. 25, more than 23 key insurgents, mostly Taliban and Haqqani network senior leaders, known for leading the planning and undertaking of deadly attacks, have either been killed or captured.
“We are continuing to work with our Afghan partners to protect the Afghan people by removing those personnel who pose a direct threat to the Afghan people,” Lt. Col. Clarence Counts, Jr., a spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force - 82 and Regional Command-East, said. “These militants used violence, fear, and intimidation to continue directing their attacks against innocent civilians as well as the very institutions that will inevitably establish security and prosperity in Afghanistan for all Afghans.” Sadly at the same time, more soldiers are dying while waiting on reinforcements and supplies.
The Department of Defense announced today the death of three soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died Jan. 3 in Ashoque, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit with multiple improvised explosives devices and small arms fire. They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.
Killed were:
Sgt. Joshua A. Lengstorf, 24, of Yoncalla, Ore.
Spc. Brian R. Bowman, 24, of Crawfordsville, Ind.
Pvt. John P. Dion, 19, of Shattuck, Okla.
