I think people are taking what he is saying out of context. I think he's saying that people don't care much about research for things like cancer until it effects them.
I help fund Parkinson's research so that in the slim chance that I contract the disease in the future I will feel good about myself for having done so!

Seriously. It is unrealistic to expect everyone to care passionately about every cause or charity. The most serious diseases and calamities will warrant the most significant responses precisely because it affects the most people, and so it will generate the greatest amount of activism amongst the populace, those especially affected personally in some manner, who will then have greater reason to contribute to finding a cure for the disease.
