What should you be expected to do? I can imagine it's a huge pain in the backside to get to the nearest safe crossing. But walking out into moving traffic isn't really the thing to do with your young kids.
Well obviously it depends on exactly how far away the crossing is, and whether one could easily cross the road safely without use of the designated crossing.

Also, why do you think the drivers mostly at fault. (I only read the article to if I've missed something I apologise), but if I'm driving along and someone steps out into my path, I'd hope I'm not at fault. Driving under the influence of drugs (pain killers) and alcohol, and leaving the scene of an accident (an offence he'd committed twice before btw)
