Given the increasing economic and political irrelevancy of the UK in the world.

Based on what? Considering we have an economy comparable to other European countries and we're heavily involved in pretty much everything political, whether it be a war or whatever, I don't know what you're on about. Anything to put the UK down though I suppose.
