Its not an example of just the forum, but an example of the internet in general. The vast majority of games, forums, and sites are basically people trolling each other or being pricks.

I think a lot of it is geeks that don't understand how to interact socially trying to copy the banter they see their cool friends and TV characters on comedy shows having and just coming across as arseholes.

That's my hypothesis anyway. I will now await a psych major to come along and pull it apart.
