Protection against a 1000 pound grizzly bear wanting to eat you alive because he is starved. I own many hunting guns and a large bear will laugh at somebody with a can of mace as he eats you. For a situation like that I would have my 7mm remington magnum with me. A shotgun wont do much but sting him unless you are loaded with slugs. A large pistol would also work short range. It would also allow him to take down an animal for food if for some reason he got lost in the wilderness. When it comes to alaska you better go prepared because if not you very well could become a statistic.

This is pretty much why I asked. If you break down in the Dalton you could be there for quite some time in your vehicle before being rescued, not to mention there's a lot of stretches of road where people come off it, especially in the winter, which is when we are going. Any site I read about it recommends at least 3 spare tyres, spare fuel and lots of supplies to eat and drink. It's regarded as the most dangerous road in north America with the longest stretch between any kind of services. And it is grizzly country. It's amazing me that the yanks here are suggesting mace instead of a gun.
