I would suggest going with HTC made phones if you want android. And I don't hear to many complaints about the Motorola Droids. There's also Google's own phone, the Nexus S which is pretty descent and comes with Android 2.3.

I have a Samsung Epic, but I wouldn't recommend Samsung. Their update support is probably the worst of all the makers. Had my phone for 5 months now and still waiting for the Android 2.2 update like every other Galaxy S owner. Not a good sign when they can't even keep their current flagship phone line up to date.

I also had to return 3 Epics just to get one that works properly. Samsung seems to have some build quality issues with a lot of their phones.
