I used to do this too.

Get a credit card with rewards per dollar spent and just pay off the card entirely every month. You will rake in the rewards (miles, gallons of gas, cashback) without affecting your finances at all. In fact, you would be making monthly payments to a revolving credit line which will help to strengthen your credit portfolio.

Also, it allows you to hold onto the cash in case of emergency. Worst case, you blow the cash and can't afford to pay off your card entirely so you let the balance ride until you get your extraordinary circumstance resolved.
