Why don't they just open up the iPhone to all carriers, and sell it from their store unlocked, in the US like the do here now?

To expand on what idchoppers posted earlier, do you understand the networks in the US Bungle?

AT&T: iPhone 4 works perfectly.
T-Mobile: iPhone 4 only works on EDGE due to T-Mobile using different 3G GSM frequency.
Verizon: iPhone 4 not supported as Verizon is a CDMA network.
Sprint: iPhone 4 not supported as Sprint is a CDMA/WiMax (4g) network.

Us in the UK are lucky enough that all networks are using the same GSM bands.
