there's one question in life that I wish to have answered before I die.

and that's, at what point does a cushion become a pillow ?

that answer has always illuded me,in all my life.

the other question is why do I always get skidmarks,even though I wipe thoroughly...

Pillows go on the bed, and are generally rectangular. Cushions go a chair and are generally square.
