ya cancun is definately one of the safer places to go right now. just stay away from the us border and mexico city.

me and the wife went to cancun and cozumel for our honeymoon and then hit up belize for a few days. cancun and cozumel was very used to americans and most everywhere we went people spoke english. my wife is fluent in spanish and didnt have to speak in spanish once. I use more spanish on a daily basis on job sites than I did in mexico. In belize on the other hand, the only people that spoke english were the ones that did our tour through the mayan ruins we went to, and the customs guy that told us not to go out in belize city after dark or during the day in groups smaller than 5.
