I always have to chuckle a bit at the "We" part when people talk about "their" favorite team

Everything you said is arguably correct for club football, but not for the World Cup. "We" in this case means 'The English and the England team (who are all English)' so assuming the poster is English it's an accurate usage of the word 'we'.
