Interesting little mind game.
I guess my reaction/response would depend on where I was at the time and the cause.
Right now I am in Afghanistan. If there was a lot of thought that this was the work of the Taliban/AQ/Terrorists of some Muslim origin then I would be very worried that there may be a plan to hit back. That would put all westerners in Kabul and area in extreme danger from mob reprisals.
Even without that I would imagine that getting home might take a while due to restrictions and disruptions on air travel that would be inevitable.
If I was at home then the immediate impact would not be that much as I am very remote from NYC and the actions there do not impact me directly. I’m outside the NYC power grid area and even if the entore eastern power grid went down ( likely) I would still have power.
The indirect impacts as the economic downturn that would be sure to follow would be immense. NYC is the largest financial trade centre in the world and the ripple effects of it suddenly disappearing could take a century to work themselves out.
Communications would also be disrupted as would all air travel in the eastern North America for some time.
The actions that you could take as individuals providing you are outside the danger zone would be to have a survival stockpile and plan in place. Thankfully the items that you would need are just about the same as for severe weather and other natural disasters. I keep a several month supply of food in the house, in large part because we buy in bulk and always have a lot of food available, We also have a generator and some fuel available so could keep the house warm. We have fireplaces and also keep a good wood supply available and live near places where we can harvest all we need for some time.
I think that my family could get through the worst of the initial downturn and loss of services caused by the financial disaster. The worst long term effect would be due to my age. I’m just about ready to retire and it would be catastrophic to me to lose all my savings in the financial aftermath and have to live in an economy that was severely depressed as would the post NYC economy be.
