Well maybe he just had a rough day.

I personally hate cases on phones, I don't like the extra size it adds and they can make the buttons hard to use (I guess not too much of an issue with the iphone). If you look after it then the actual phone housing should do the trick. If it gets scratches or damaged you can just buy a new housing for it.
