Agreed, I don't see what being a mac has to do with making it hard to recovery data.

As long as no data wiping tools were in play of course.

I know, that is why I was confused. I lent a firewire HDD to a classmate in college that was in HFS format and they ended up formatting it on their PC. I ran some recovery software and got all my data back.
