It's a myth these days that a Mac can't recover data. Often this myth is kept going by Mac support themselves to con you into taking it into a store to pay $$$ for a recovery. If you're savvy though it should never be an issue.

Back on topic, just make sure your system isn't writing any data to that drive. Otherwise the odds of your old data being overwritten increases exponentially.
