I was commenting on your use of the word average. You are implying that the average annual salary is US$52,000 pa and I was saying it was even less than that at around US$40,000 gross. Someone on that salary would not be paying US$3,000 per month in child support, as their net income would not cover that.
You forget about taxes; I make 6 figures and and at the end of the month I take home less than 5k (ignoring the two extra paychecks per year). My parents combined salaries when I turned 18 (in 2001) was under $100,000 per year, and they raised two kids off of it while paying a mortgage and buying 5 cars during that timespan.
