Either the media has never bothered reporting them before, Or the amount of earthquakes hitting Asia and other areas of the world has becoming increasingly more frequent.
This year doesn't look out of the ordinary so far.

I predict we're heading towards something that's going to kill millions more people in one go,
The world just seems to be heading that way. That could happen any time. One big earthquake/landslide/volcanic eruption/meteor impact in the ocean has the potential to create a tsunami big enough to do it.
