Ok still not getting it, probably my previous explanations but hey ho.
I've got nothing against the Union but I'm English. To me, Scotland, Wales et al are separate countries. Same as any where in Europe. We've got a closly intertwined history but there's loads of neighboring countries which share history.

Obviously this is shooting from the hip what with me not being from there but are there any Scandinavians that can comment? Do you think of yourself as Swedish/Norwegian etc way before thinking of yourself as Scandinavians?
I'll answer that. Yes, they definately do.

as an aside, when did Englishmen insist on referring to themselves as "from the UK"? I could have sworn that when I was a kid, people from England, Scotland would say "I'm from England" or "I'm from Scotland" afaik, most Scots and Welsh still tend to say this "I'm from Wales" (not from UK) anyways, was there some sort of concerted gov. politically correct campaign to make sure everyone says "I'm from the UK"

I've always wondered that.
