My first car's fuel gauge didn't work at all so I did run out a few times in that. Just use to carry a jerry can in the boot with some fuel in it for when I did run out. Was normally ok though, just reset the odometer when I put some petrol in it after running out a few times you can guess when you need more fuel before you run out totally.

I didn't think it was good practice to run dry in modern EFI cars...
