I did once empty my car completely, but on purpose. I had a canister with me. I wanted to know how big my reserve really is. And surprisingly I could driver more than 100km with the "on reserve" signal on. Car manufacterors are really playing it safe these days.

I remember my old Opel Kadett. When the reserve light came on, you had 30km at most until it was empty.
