Maybe I have just been watching too much StarGate, but I am not convinced. We can't even build modern sky scrappers without Slave labour.

I too doubt they could have managed that without slave labor. Even assuming it was a mixture of slave and non-slave, anyone who wasn't a slave probably didn't have a choice in the matter, and wasn't paid a fair wage. Throughout history slave labor has been pretty common, and commoners weren't often fairly compensated. It wasn't all that long ago we had peasant labor. They weren't "slaves", but they were damned close to it.
