I too doubt they could have managed that without slave labor. Even assuming it was a mixture of slave and non-slave, anyone who wasn't a slave probably didn't have a choice in the matter, and wasn't paid a fair wage. Throughout history slave labor has been pretty common, and commoners weren't often fairly compensated. It wasn't all that long ago we had peasant labor. They weren't "slaves", but they were damned close to it.
From what I have read I don't believe that at the time of the pyramids the Egyptians even had money and they they paid their taxes with grain/food or by doing labour for the Pharaoh. Namely building monuments and cities.
