Here the fine itself wouldnt get higher, but if you lose you'd have to pay for the costs for the trial. So you'd end up with several hundreds of Euros if you lose. Thats why people here usually just pay the fine.

Why does it cost so much? Here, you usually just appear before a magistrate and the matter can be settled in a matter of 15 minutes or so, unless you wish to fight it further.
